Villach

Villach sits in southern Austria's Carinthia region, near the borders of Italy and Slovenia, giving it a distinctly different feel from the more austere cities further north—there's a warmth here, both in climate and temperament, that locals attribute to Mediterranean influence drifting up through the mountain passes.

The old town is compact and pastel-colored, centered on Hauptplatz, with the Drau River running through it. It's pleasant but not a major draw in itself; Villach functions more as a base for the surrounding lakes and mountains than as a destination for its own architecture or museums.

The real appeal is what surrounds the city. The Carinthian lake district—Wörthersee, Ossiacher See, Faaker See—offers some of the warmest swimmable lake water in the Alps during summer, ringed by mountains and small resort towns. In winter, the Nassfeld and Gerlitzen ski areas are close by and less crowded than the bigger Austrian resorts. The Dobratsch mountain looms over the city, with a panoramic road to its summit.

Villach also hosts a large Kirchtag festival each summer, one of Austria's biggest folk festivals, with traditional costume and folk music.

It's a relaxed, uncrowded place, good for slower travel, outdoor activity, and lake time rather than urban sightseeing.
