Thethi National Park

Theth sits deep in the Albanian Alps (also called the Accursed Mountains), reachable by a rough, winding road from Shkodër that takes several hours—part of the appeal is that it still feels cut off from the rest of the country. The village itself is a scatter of stone houses and traditional kulla towers, some built for defense during blood feuds governed by the old Kanun code, which still shapes local memory even though the practice has faded.

The main draws are the hikes: the Blue Eye of Theth, a cold turquoise spring pool reached through a gorge, and the classic day-long trek over to Valbona through the Valbona Pass, considered one of the best hikes in the Balkans. The scenery is dramatic limestone peaks, waterfalls, and dense forest, with shepherds and grazing livestock still part of daily life.

Accommodation is mostly small family-run guesthouses serving home-cooked meals—simple but genuinely warm. There's little in the way of nightlife or polish here; electricity and wifi can be patchy, and the season is short, roughly June through September, since snow closes things down otherwise.

It suits travelers wanting real mountain immersion rather than comfort or convenience.
