Maribor

Maribor is Slovenia's second city, set along the Drava River in the country's northeast wine country, and it feels distinctly calmer and less touristed than Ljubljana, about an hour away by car or train. The old town has a compact, pleasant riverside core with a castle, a cathedral, and the Lent district, home to the Old Vine—reputedly the oldest producing grapevine in the world, still yielding grapes after over 400 years, with a small museum devoted to it.

Wine is the real draw regionally: Maribor sits amid the Styria wine region, and the surrounding hills of Slovenske Gorice and the Pohorje massif are dotted with family-run wineries and vineyard cottages worth a day trip. Pohorje itself offers hiking and skiing depending on season, along with a cable car up from the city.

Maribor has a university-town energy, with a young population and a manageable, walkable center. It doesn't have blockbuster sights, and that's part of its appeal: it's unhurried, affordable, and easy to pair with wine touring or as a quieter alternative base for exploring northeastern Slovenia and nearby Austria, just a short drive north.
