Krujë

Krujë is a small mountain town about 30 minutes from Tirana, best known as the historic seat of Skanderbeg, the 15th-century Albanian nobleman who led resistance against Ottoman expansion for over two decades. His fortress still dominates the town, and inside it the Skanderbeg Museum, designed by Enver Hoxha's daughter, tells the story with a mix of nationalist pride and genuine history worth understanding before diving into Albania's broader past.

Below the castle walls, the old bazaar is the main draw for visitors: a steep cobblestone street lined with shops selling traditional rugs, silver filigree jewelry, antiques, and Ottoman-era textiles, many of them genuinely old rather than tourist reproductions. It's one of the few places in Albania where this kind of craft market survives intact.

The town itself is small enough to see in a half day, which makes it a common day trip from Tirana rather than an overnight stop. The views from the fortress over the Adriatic plain below are worth the climb alone, especially on a clear day.

Krujë gets busy with domestic tourists and school groups, so arriving early or visiting on a weekday makes for a calmer wander through the bazaar.
